It’s easy to continue through our days following other people’s priorities, but whose life is it anyway? Wendy Hinman, author of the hit travel book, Tightwads on the Loose (2012), will share how her search for a more satisfying life led her from successful business woman and entrepreneur to sailing 34,000 miles aboard a 31-foot sailboat and loving it despite facing many “character-building opportunities.” Through these opportunities she realized that often the biggest challenges are the most rewarding, and are what make us feel most alive. She learned firsthand that we rarely know what we are capable of until we push ourselves well beyond our comfort zone. Though she’s lived without what many would consider “necessities,” Hinman has discovered a sense of humor is mandatory. While we sometimes can’t change our circumstances, we can change how we respond to them and thereby transform our lives in the process. Hinman will share how her experiences shaped a philosophy that guides her life and can offer perspective on yours.
Biography: Wendy Hinman is the author of the hit travel book Tightwads on the Loose: A Seven-Year Pacific Odyssey. A successful business woman and entrepreneur with an insatiable curiosity and zest for life, Hinman has never been willing to settle for the usual. A quest for adventure took her on a seven-year Pacific odyssey aboard a 31-foot boat with her husband during which she faced endless “character-building opportunities.” Yet she fell in love with voyaging so much she hardly wanted to return, despite the fact that her husband could barely stand inside their tiny boat and, in stormy conditions, it occasionally turned into their own private torture chamber. Fortunately, she did return to share a humorous take on their adventures afloat and perspective on life in her book, Tightwads on the Loose. Hinman is an inspiring speaker, who offers refreshing philosophy and insight on following our dreams wherever they may lead. More information can be found at www.wendyhinman.com.

Wendy Hinman Will Be Signing books in Hansville December 6, 2015

The Hansville Writing Group is sponsoring an author event from 2-4 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Hansville Community Center, including Wendy Hinman, Author of Tightwads on the Loose.

As every author knows, you need to get your book out in front of the public so they will want to read the book, so we are sponsoring the North Kitsap author event on Dec. 6 at the community center. We have 14 authors in our group and several other local authors will join us too. Among them will be:

• Mary Van Valkenberg, “An Unforeseen Journey”: Tales of the pioneering spirit among the early settlers on Decatur Island in the San Juan Islands.

• Wendy Hinman, “Tightwads on the Loose”: A seven-year Pacific odyssey — the exciting story of two vagabonds who explore far-flung islands and civilizations for seven years aboard a 31-foot wooden boat.

• Betty Alder, “Old Parents and Purple Tulips”: Navigating the maze of caregiving, dementia, sibling conflict and guns.

• A.C. Fuller, “The Anonymous Source”: A year after 9/11, New York City court reporter Alex Vane uncovers the scoop of a lifetime, but the $500 million secret he discovers could cost him his job, and his life.

• “The Hansville Historical Society”: History of the town and people of the North Kitsap Peninsula.

• All these wonderful authors as well as stories from the Hansville Writing Group: Memoirs, fiction stories, poems and essays written by members of our group.

Don’t forget that this month there is another event you might want to mark on your calendar: The arts and craft show on Nov. 14, and then, that night, the wine tasting and auction.

Aren’t we lucky to live in an area where we have a community center that provides us with so many activities and opportunities? I’m pretty sure you agree with me when I see the great attendance at the Hansville Community Center Happenings.

Wendy Hinman to share her Pacific Odyssey at the Everett Library

Seven Years Before the Mast

Tightwads on the Loose by Wendy HinmanWendy Hinman relates in her book Tightwads on the Loose the story of her and husband Garth Wilcox’s epic sailing voyage that more than tripled Richard Henry Dana’s Two Years Before the Mast.

What began as an open-ended voyage on their 31-foot wooden cutter The Velella, turned into a seven-year, 34,000 mile saga, complete with typhoons, close calls with freighters, potential pirates, phantom night vessels, and even a swim in crocodile-infested waters. Hinman manages to wring humor from this conjugal saga, which touched on nineteen countries–and a lot of ocean.

Copies of her book will be on sale at the event.

Event Date: Sunday, October 25, 2015 – 2:00pm to 3:30pm

Location: Main Everett Library Auditorium, 2702 Hoyt Everett, WA 98201 Get Directions

The Sailing Podcast Interviews Wendy Hinman

The Sailing Podcast LogoA listener named Tom contacted David Anderson of the Sailing Podcast to say:

“I have been reading Wendy Hinman’s great book, “Tightwads on the Loose: A Seven-Year Pacific Odyssey” and I think she’d be a great guest on your show. Wendy seems like she has all the elements that you like to highlight in your podcasts: a great adventure story, lots of detailed advice on how to cruise, and many entertaining stories. She’s back from her 7-year trip with her husband, and now they’re building their new dream boat to go out again, so I’m sure there’s some interesting stories there that haven’t been told yet. I sure would like to hear more about them and their plans. Can you try to see if you can get her on your podcast? You have a wonderful knack of drawing out such great stories!”

Request granted.
