Tightwads on the Loose: A Seven Year Pacific Odyssey by Wendy Hinman
If you have ever dreamed of buying a 31-foot long boat and setting out on the open ocean with your husband, then you should consider reading this hilarious and cautionary tale. Wendy and Garth Hinman spent seven years at sea, traveling from place to place and living on their boat. The result is what they call “character building opportunities,” also known as the inevitable outcome of spending 24 hours a day with one other person confined in a small space.

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR CRUISING IN COMFORT at 10:45 Clubhouse
Being prepared emotionally as well as physically for the challenges and joys of cruising will help you make the best of your cruising experience. Wendy will share practical tips she’s learned over many years of cruising both locally and internationally on a variety of boats, as well as the philosophy that helped her navigate through the unexpected.
Wendy Hinman spent seven years at sea, sailing 34,000 miles aboard her 31-foot wooden cutter Velella with her husband. On such a small boat, they lived without many modern conveniences, but enjoyed a rich adventure on a sustainable budget. Wendy had also cruised the Hawaiian Islands, the Chesapeake Bay, San Diego, Greece, and the Virgin Islands and taught sailing before she left on this journey which took her to 19 countries. She has cruised extensively in the Pacific Northwest and is an avid racer who has raced a variety of boats in venues around the world. She has published articles in a wide range of publications and is the author of Tightwads on the Loose, a top-selling book about her adventures afloat. www.wendyhinman.com

With Anna and Peter Quinn, the proud new owners, and a number of notable local authors like Jonathon Evison, Sheila Bender, Erica Bauermeister, Terry Persun and more, Wendy celebrated the reopening of Imprint Books. Anna and Peter Quinn, both avid writers, have been running the vibrant Writers Workshoppe in Port Townsend for some time and found taking on the book store to be a natural extension of the writing community they’ve created. They purchased the store from previous owners Judy and David Hartman, who have retired. In addition to a vast array of books, they offer writers workshops with some of the best names in the business.

Exploring the World for Seven Years: Wendy Hinman Talks New Book, Life at Sea
by Katie Burke
University Alum Wendy Hinman has seen very little footage of the Sept 11th attacks, she missed the majority of the Bush administration and the advent of Facebook. Instead of experiencing these events on land, Hinman was sailing the Pacific Ocean with her husband in a 31-foot-long sailboat — for seven years.
“We didn’t have refrigeration, we didn’t have Internet, we didn’t have phones . . .” Read a pdf of the full hard copy here: Michigan Daily Article.

As a lifelong sailor, I’ve heard the names Lin and Larry Pardey my whole life. Awareness of them worked its way into my consciousness so early that I cannot remember a time when I didn’t know their names. But what’s the real story behind this first couple of sailing? I read Herb McCormick’s new book, “As Long As It’s Fun” to find out.
Here’s my review: http://threesheetsnw.com/blog/2014/04/as-long-as-its-fun-the-pardeys-are-more-than-sailing-purists/

A review in Voyages Magazine calls Tightwads “an entertaining book” and says “descriptions of temples, typhoons and terrifying shiisas are beautifully expressed.”
The reviewer, Ami Green, goes on to say “Hinman gives us an opportunity to experience parts of the Pacific that are on a path less traveled. I finished her book with salt spray on my cheeks and a strong desire to see Japan.”
