The Traveler Store Spotlights Wendy Hinman

Seven Years Voyaging on a 31-foot boat and still married! Wendy Hinman, author of Tightwads on the Loose: A Seven Year Pacific Odyssey, will share stories and photos from her 34,000-mile voyage on some of the waters less traveled. Find out how she remained innocent of plotting divorce or murder while sailing 34,000 miles aboard a tender 31-foot boat despite numerous “character-building” opportunities.

Why some women don’t want to go sailing with their husbands

Why Some Women Don’t Want to Go Sailing With Their Husbands

In honor of women’s day TODAY when women get in for free at the Seattle Boat show . . .

I came across an interesting blog post recently I thought I’d share.  It’s part of a great blog site called Women and Cruising, which features tons of great advice about preparing to go voyaging.
This post features a woman’s transition from stiletto heals to sailboat voyaging.  Not every woman takes to the sailing lifestyle. Here she shares her own experience and muses why.
While I couldn’t relate to all of this post–perhaps I am missing some essential portion of the X chromosome–, the following two paragraphs made me chuckle:.
“Something happens to a man when it concerns his boat that doesn’t happen around his house and garden: He becomes completely hysterical! He washes and polishes his boat as soon as he eyes an opportunity for it, no one can set a mark on his boat, and everything is lacquered and kept to perfection, which his wife probably never would have guessed he was capable of.
And at the same time he calls out commands behind the steering wheel or tiller, while he makes his wife or girlfriend rush around on the deck with the mooring lines and jump from the boat to the pier and back again, and when he shouts “watch out!”, it is the boat she should watch out for, not herself. And all of this is regardless of her age and nimbleness!”
But, alas,  this woman arrived at the same conclusion:  She does like sailing, and, like me, especially for the feeling of independence it offers.

This is the Captain speaking:

We are experiencing some issues.

I’ve had some computer issues recently and just discovered that those who have subscribed to my posts using feedburner were getting a paragraph of spam with links to all sorts of garbage. I am so sorry about this and am grateful for those who’ve brought it to my attention. I am trying to rectify the situation. I could use your help. I have changed the subscription set up. I hope this will be the last email you receive from me with spam in it.

I’d appreciate it if you’d let me know about any further junk you receive that has my name on it, so I can continue to work on solving this problem.

Thanks for your help in getting this ship back on track.

Docking Without a Hitch

Three Sheets Northwest Feature Story

No matter how much experience you have, docking can still be humbling. Here’s a public airing of one of my screw ups.

“You’d think after double-handing for more than 34,000 miles and two decades of racing, we’d know a thing or two about docking. Believe it or not, when it comes to docking, it is still possible to humble even the most experienced of sailors.
