As part of the Corinthian Yacht Club Speaker series, Wendy Hinman, author of Tightwads on the Loose: A Seven Year Pacific Odyssey, will share stories and photos from her 34,000-mile voyage on waters less traveled. Find out how she remained innocent of plotting divorce or murder while sailing 34,000 miles aboard a tender 31-foot boat despite numerous “character-building” opportunities. Though she lived without what most would call necessities, what mattered most was teamwork and a sense of humor.
Her story has been featured in Cruising World, Sailing, and Sail, and featured on the Sailing Podcast. It has garnered great reviews and been selected as a best travel book and won the Journey Award.
For details:
In this episode of StoryJacker, Lyssa Danehy deHart interviews adventurer, traveler, and speaker, Wendy Hinman, author of Tightwads on the Loose.
Tightwads on the Loose tells the story of Wendy and her husband Garth, lured to sea by the promise of adventure. They buy a 31-foot boat that fits their budget better than it fits Garth’s large frame and set sail for an open-ended voyage, never imagining they’d be gone seven years, or cover 34,000 miles at the pace of a fast walk. They live without most “necessities” and learn that teamwork and a sense of humor matter most as they face endless “character-building opportunities.”
There are really two stories happening, the first is the outward adventure and the the second is the internal adventure. We spend this episode delving into the internal experience and how Wendy was able and willing to leap out of the box and into an adventure.
To find your own copy of Tightwads on the Loose, head over to Wendy’s website, wendyhinman.com or you can find her book on Amazon. Wendy also is a regular speaker at book stores, libraries, boating clubs and at writing conferences. If you have the opportunity to go hear her, take it!

Amazing women who’ve laid the groundwork for the rest of us . . . In 1897, the first meeting of The League of American Pen Women was organized by Marian Longfellow O’Donoghue (yes, Henry’s niece), who wrote for newspapers in Washington D.C. and Boston. She invited fellow journalists Margaret Sullivan Burke and Anna Sanborn Hamilton to join her in establishing a “progressive press union” for the female writers of Washington. “The Dauntless Three“ brought together seventeen women: writers, novelists, newspaper women, a teacher, a poet and an artist. They hoped that these “active pen women” would find in the group, “mutual aid, advice, and future development” for each other and their careers. The association became The National League of American Pen Women in 1921 with thirty-five local branches in various states. And they are still doing so today.
I’m honored to be presenting to them at their luncheon in March. I’ll share our voyage around the Pacific and my writing journey.

It’s easy to continue through our days following other people’s priorities, but whose life is it anyway? Wendy Hinman, author of the hit travel book, Tightwads on the Loose (2012), will share how her search for a more satisfying life led her from successful business woman and entrepreneur to sailing 34,000 miles aboard a 31-foot sailboat and loving it despite facing many “character-building opportunities.” Through these opportunities she realized that often the biggest challenges are the most rewarding, and are what make us feel most alive. She learned firsthand that we rarely know what we are capable of until we push ourselves well beyond our comfort zone. Though she’s lived without what many would consider “necessities,” Hinman has discovered a sense of humor is mandatory. While we sometimes can’t change our circumstances, we can change how we respond to them and thereby transform our lives in the process. Hinman will share how her experiences shaped a philosophy that guides her life and can offer perspective on yours.
Biography: Wendy Hinman is the author of the hit travel book Tightwads on the Loose: A Seven-Year Pacific Odyssey. A successful business woman and entrepreneur with an insatiable curiosity and zest for life, Hinman has never been willing to settle for the usual. A quest for adventure took her on a seven-year Pacific odyssey aboard a 31-foot boat with her husband during which she faced endless “character-building opportunities.” Yet she fell in love with voyaging so much she hardly wanted to return, despite the fact that her husband could barely stand inside their tiny boat and, in stormy conditions, it occasionally turned into their own private torture chamber. Fortunately, she did return to share a humorous take on their adventures afloat and perspective on life in her book, Tightwads on the Loose. Hinman is an inspiring speaker, who offers refreshing philosophy and insight on following our dreams wherever they may lead. More information can be found at www.wendyhinman.com.
